Microsoft Announces Windows 98 Is Scheduled to Be Available on June 25
Excitement for Windows 98 Building Among PC Enthusiasts

Microsoft Corp. announced that the upcoming release of the Microsoft® Windows® 98 operating system is scheduled to be available worldwide on June 25, 1998. In addition, a recent consumer-event survey revealed that 95 percent of those surveyed plan to upgrade. Windows 98 will be available simultaneously to customers in stores and on new PCs from leading manufacturers.

Windows 98 is designed to help you in some of the following ways.

  • Take advantage of hardware and software innovations. In the last few years, major advances in computer hardware and software have achieved industry support. Innovations such as Universal Serial Bus, IEEE 1394, FAT32, Accelerated Graphics Port (AGP), graphics cards, MMX processors and DVD promise new levels of PC usability. Windows 98 provides built-in support for these hardware and software advancements so that you can take full advantage of them.
  • Works in an easier, faster, and more productive environment. With Windows 98, Microsoft has focused on improving the key areas that keep users waiting on their PCs today, including opening applications, which averages 36 percent faster,* accessing the Internet, viewing graphics and shutting down the PC, which is up to two to five times quicker than with Windows 95.  The new features and technologies in Windows 98 can help you find and format the information you want faster than ever, increase the speed of your applications and network connections, and automate connecting to a network drive and creating shortcuts.
  • Work in a more reliable and more manageable environment. One of Microsoft's goals is to reduce the costs of owning PCs while increasing the value of using them. Windows 98 includes features and functionality to configure systems, troubleshoot problems, and keep PCs up-to-date. Windows 98 can automatically install new drivers, patches, and other updated components.
  • Take advantage of the Internet with complete Internet integration. By incorporating version 4.0 of the Internet Explorer Web browser, Windows 98 contains everything you need to take full advantage of the Internet and your company intranet. Advanced browsing capabilities, Internet communication tools, and technologies for automating Internet and intranet information delivery provide a new level of Internet integration in Windows 98.
  • Have more fun. Support for multimedia will allow you to receive high-quality movies and audio--even DIRECTV--directly on your desktop.
Estimated retail pricing for the upgrade version for users of Windows 95 and Windows 3.1 is $109 (U.S.).
